8 Reasons Applicants Fail to Get into the College of Their Choice

8 Reasons Applicants Fail to Get into the College of Their Choice Getting Into College is Hard, Getting into the College of Your Choice is Even Harder It’s the time of year when many students are starting their college search (let our Irvine in-home college consultants help). If you are starting your junior year in high school then this is the year that you will need to make some really big decisions about your future. For seniors, it’s time to finish up all of those applications and send them out in a few short months. Many students get into the college of their choice and most get into college somewhere, but many students find that they get a letter from their dream school that reads “We regret to inform you”. These words are devastating and can make any student feel like their hard work didn’t pay off. The first question that will pop into anyone’s head is, “why”. So let’s find out. Reason 1 You didn’t do adequate research It is extremely important to do extensive research about the colleges that you want to attend prior to starting the application process. This amount of in depth research can become overwhelming very quickly and that’s why many students don’t follow through with it. This can also become overwhelming for parents as their hearts are closely tied with your happiness. Regardless, you will need to know what your potential colleges expect from you in order to have a chance at acceptance. I recommend having a college counseling consultant come to your home and help you navigate this process. If you say “I want to go out of state but I don’t like cold weather but I do like big universities and I might want to study English literature but my parents really want me to go into business or medicine”, a college counselor can take that statement and turn it into a list of potential places that will fit your needs (READ: Ask a Nerd! Just Started College and Im Overwhelmed, What do I do?). Reason 2 You weren’t realistic Many students want to apply to top tier and Ivy League schools. I say go for it. However, be realistic about the realities of being accepted to these schools. Put these types of applications in the “Hey wouldn’t that be awesome” pile instead of in the “I will definitely get in there” pile. Schools like Harvard and Yale can pick and choose not only from the nation’s best but also from the world’s best applicants. When I say ‘best’, I mean the best fit. Perhaps this year they will be looking for leadership while perhaps in two years time they will be looking for creativity and uniqueness. We don’t really know nor will we ever as the acceptance process in entirely confidential. However, some things are rather transparent. If you wish to attend these types of schools you will need the following (at a minimum): Nearly perfect SAT scores Nearly perfect grades A larger than life, fantastic essay Original and sincere community service Something that makes you stand out from other applicants I recommend that you shoot for the moon but be realistic about what the schools that you are applying to expect of the ‘average’ applicant. Reason 3 You looked at colleges too late If you are entering your junior year, you should be looking at colleges as soon as on the calendar-conveniently after the SAT- as a good time to start your search. Narrow it down you settle in to your first month of school. Mark October 15th by region, state, type of school, degrees offered etc in order to get it down to your 10. If you are starting your senior year, then you are behind in your timeline. If this is the case, then open another tab in your computer and start looking right now. If you are entering into your sophomore year then you have plenty of time but it certainly doesn’t hurt to start thinking about what you might want in a college at this point in time. Think about whether you would enjoy a big campus or a small, easy to navigate, college. Think about what region of the country you might like to live in for 4 years and what you want to study (READ: Five Tips For Your College Entrance Essay). If you choose a college too late in the game, you may find that you should have done something back in sophomore year (but you are now a senior) or that you needed better scores on your SAT or ACT but there is not enough time to raise them to get that top score. Start early. Your 10 schools (not an exact number) should include the following: 1. At least 2-3 colleges that you feel totally confident that you can get into (often called ‘safety’ schools). Your SAT score should be at least 100 points above these schools’ accepted average and your GPA should be well above what they are looking for. This ensures that you will be able to attend college somewhere right after high school. (Hint: Do not make UC Berkeley your ‘safety’ school. This is not realistic.) 2. At least 2 schools that you really want to attend and that would make your dreams come true but are, perhaps, also everyone else’s dream and/or extremely hard to get into. Don’t sell yourself short. If you meet the minimum qualifications for Stanford University and you desperately want to go there, take the time to send out an application. The only way to truly fail is to never have tried (CLICK: Hardest Colleges to Get Into). 3. About 5 schools for which you are the ‘average’ applicant. This means that you meet the minimum qualifications but these schools have at least a 30%-40% acceptance rate. (Do your research ahead of time as mentioned above). These will be your ‘mid range’ schools and most students end up attending a university or college in this category. Make sure that you pick schools that you have a genuine interest in attending. Go visit the campuses and get a feel for the culture and community. Reason 4 You didn’t plan enough time for adequate study College prep is now a reality for all college-bound high school students. It is not simply a Saturday in October or June and a few applications (Although it was never really just that). College prep generally starts the summer prior to junior year and continues until the receipt of acceptance letters. It is important, crucial actually that you leave adequate study time. Students can potentially improve their initial SAT score by 300+ points but only with hours upon hours of test prep and practice exams (READ: 5 Awesome SAT Apps). Students can also write and re-write and edit and re-edit college entrance essays but all of this takes an immense amount of time. If you are starting your junior year, it’s time to make a plan and a timeline. If you are having trouble doing this yourself, then ask your tutor or a college counselor to help you through the process. But, whatever you do, don’t put this off (READ: College Textbooks: The Struggle is Real). Reason 5 Too many other applicants fit your profile In some cases you may have done everything right. You scored 150 points higher than needed on the SAT and you took 4 AP classes and scored a 4 or 5 on all of the exams. You did more than was required for your community service hours and you wrote a stellar entrance essay. Colleges like diversity in their student body and, if there were hundreds of students who happened to do similar types of community service or hail from the same state or for some other reason were similar to you, the admissions committee may put some similar students’ applications in the “no” pile. Why does a student get an acceptance letter to Stanford but a rejection from UCLA? Who knows. Reason 6 Your entrance essay did not make you stand out as an individual The college entrance essay makes the SAT and ACT essays look like a walk in the park. Your essay must be well written, original and unique, be a true representation of you and create a positive response in the reader. The majority of students that I talk to are totally on board with SAT study but never mention any concern for their essay. Do not think of this as an afterthought. Countless students go from the ‘maybe’ pile to the ‘yes’ or ‘no’ pile based on their essay. Reason 7 The luck of the draw I know that this seems depressing but sometimes it’s just a matter of luck. Most universities are impacted and the reality is that some students just get cut from the roster. Universities aren’t going to tell you, or any of us, why or how they make their final decisions. That’s why it is so important to apply to several schools that you are interested in. Reason 8 You didn’t really want to go to that school in the first place If you don’t really, really want to go to a certain school, it will probably show in your application process. Universities can usually tell when an applicant isn’t that interested in their school or if they are your second choice. With so many students choosing any given school as their first choice, why would a college accept a student who doesn’t have their heart in it? The Dos and Donts of Dropping a Class in College

The Dos and Donts of Dropping a Class in College Dropping a Class: The Dos and Donts Many students get to a point, especially in their first semester,   where they have to decide whether theyre going to power through a class or give up and drop it. For many years students would take the majority of a difficult course, drop it and save their notes for the next term. However, over the years professors figured this out and will often change key aspects of the course so that students have one shot at a passing score. On the other hand, some students honestly didnt know what they were getting into when they signed up for a class or simply werent ready for the material or the time commitment required. So what are the essential rules of dropping a class in college?                       Do: Always make the decision to drop a class after sleeping on it. Students who get overly stressed will often run down to the registrar’s office and drop a class after getting one bad test grade. 99% of such students painfully regret that they dropped the class when they later find out that they could have completed an extra credit assignment or that the ‘D’ they received on their exam was only worth 2% on the final class grade. Students who are considering dropping university level courses should always sleep on it to make sure that their decision is an informed one and not made out of anxiety (READ: 5 Things Successful Students Never Say). Do: Talk to the professor prior to making a final decision. If a student is truly struggling, professors will be able to sit down during office hours and talk about the student’s chance of passing the class. If the professor already knows that the best possible final grade a student could get is a ‘C’, and that they are at risk for failing, they will communicate this. In this case dropping may be a good option. Always talk to the professor beforehand. Dont: Don’t re-enroll in the same class without figuring out what went wrong the first time around. Signing up for the same class next semester without doing additional research will generally result in another low final grade. Students who need to repeat a class should do research on the subject, consult a private tutor, and make sure that they are in line for an A or B grade prior to signing up for a second time. Do: Find out what the long-term repercussions will be for dropping the class. Think about how this will look to potential employers or on a graduate school application. For example, Students who drop a class one week after they enrolled can easily explain that it simply didnt fit into their schedule or the description of the class was not what they were expecting. However, students who drop a class on the last possible date may have some explaining to do (READ: 6 Ways to Spend February Break). Dont: Its not necessary to share the reason for dropping a class with classmates. Certainly classmates will notice a friend’s absence from the drop date forward and will be curious. However, its generally not a good idea to talk about the intricate details of deciding to drop a course. A student’s reasons for their individual academic path are their own. Do: Always find out if the exact course will need to be repeated. For example, if a student is thinking about dropping Math 101 during their freshman year it’s extremely likely that they will have to take Math 101 a second time. On the other hand, if a student wants to drop Anthropology 203, its very possible that they will be able to find an alternate class to fill their science credit requirement (READ: Extra Curricular Activities For Your College Resume). Do: Find out if the same class can be taken with a different professor. Many students drop a class not just because of the subject matter but because they find the professor’s assignments to be overly difficult. If the subject matter is within a student’s grasp but the professor’s personality is not a good match, the student is advised to find out if they can take the same course with a different professor next term. If this is the only professor that teaches the specific course, students may decide to simply power through the class, pass it and be done. In short? With the exception of dropping a class within the first week due to scheduling issues, its important for college students to weigh the various options, benefits, and repercussions when they decide to drop a course if youre still not sure, talk to your Orange County college consultant. There are both pros and cons to dropping a course and its a decision that should not be made lightly. All blog entries, with the exception of guest bloggers, are written by Tutor Nerds. 7 Benefits of Becoming a Badass Bilingual

7 Benefits of Becoming a Badass Bilingual Armed and fabulous.Bilingual people hold the big guns in this world.Being fluent in a second language gives us a huge advantage when it comes to communication, travel, work, love and raw brain power.Theres nothing that being bilingual doesnt make better. Research Concludes: Bilingual People Are Badass  The research is definitely conclusive. All kinds of studies have shown how positively being bilingual can affect the human brain. If youre on the internet looking up the benefits of bilingualism, then I bet youve already seen tons of headlines proclaiming that the bilingual brain is a lean, mean, information processing machine. It is.Bilinguals have shown enhanced creativity, better flexibility and multitasking capabilities,  boosted problem solving skills and can even stave off Alzheimers and dementia. The Process of Becoming BilingualYou may be wondering, Does it matter if Im not bilingual yet? Will I still get some awesome advantages after learning my target language? The answers to those questions are no and yes, respectively.Sure, youre right about there being different types of bilinguals. There are successive bilinguals, like me (and possibly you), who acquired a second language after fully developing our native language. Then there are  simultaneous bilinguals, you know, those jealousy-inspiring kids  with the enormous gift of growing up bilingual.Neither way is worse. Actually, each process has its own unique benefits for the language learner. For instance, one informative study showed us  that kids who grew up being naturally bilingual are better with convergent thinking,  and later-in-life bilinguals are better with divergent thinking. The former (convergent thinking) means that your brain is better at giving the one, right answer, and the latter means your brain is better at producing a diversity of possible correct answers. Both thought processes underlie improved creativity, so nobody is worse off based on when  they became bilingual. No matter when, h ow or why you start learning, youre going to be equally badass.Feeling pumped to make time for language learning? Then lets take a look at all the great benefits bilinguals get to experience.7 Benefits of Becoming a Badass Bilingual1. When you speak two languages, you actually speak three.Speaking with other bilinguals who know your particular language pair is a special treat. Youll have the luxury of mixing up languages  in whichever manner best expresses your thoughts and feelings. You may end up feeling like theyre the best friends you ever hadâ€"who else could possibly understand you so well? The only catch is that you may soon feel your proficiency in each  individual  language slipping away. For instance, after speaking Spanglish so long with my friends, coworkers and boyfriend in Ecuador, I soon found that I was losing my command of Spanish and English when I had to speak just one.Its like if a monolingual person were forced to not use a huge percentage of their stored vocabul ary. Its hard, man!In the end, though, our ability to switch back and forth between languages grants us a huge boost in mental flexibility and improves our ability to multitask. So it isnt all that bad, after all.2.  Language broadens your perspective through  linguistic relativity.Language helps you understand the world. Any bilingual will know that learning a language isnt just about learning words and grammar. You need to gain knowledge of the society and culture behind that language to achieve any degree of fluency. And thats because different languages  arent  simply different sets of words to express the same ideas.Nope.Theyre entirely different outlooks on the world.Linguistic relativity  is the concept that language dramatically shapes the way we think, perceive and interact with things around us. That means speaking a different language may actively alter your mindset and thoughts. Its a big deal in the psychological and language learning communities, and its certainly up fo r debate.Whether or not this is an actual, psychological process is one thingâ€"most bilinguals can tell you that there is a profound spiritual and emotional element to being bilingual. It may lead you to develop a love of another language and culture, to fall in love with someone or to communicate with someone totally different from you and hear their thoughts on life and important issues.Allow this to open you up to the world, broaden your horizons and bring you closer to people of all races and nationalities. The more languages we all learn, the closer well come to being citizens of the world  rather than citizens of our own specific chunks of Earth.3. You get to really appreciate  bilingual content. This is probably the most fun perk to being bilingual, and you dont even realize it until it happens to you.People who speak Spanish and English can understand every last word of songs by Enrique Iglesias, Shakira, Pitbull and other internationally-successful Latin pop stars. And than k your lucky stars: Youll get to watch the masterpiece series Breaking Bad without missing a single precious word.Weeds, another series about the international drug industryâ€"more comedic and less artful than Breaking Badâ€"also gives you some quality Spanglish time. Plus, youll get a kick out of seeing the main character, Nancy, try  to toss out a few terribly-pronounced Spanish words to communicate with her  Mexican  criminal pals.French and German speakers can zip through multilingual Inglorious Basterds scenes  without ever having to glance at the subtitles. Even though Shoshanna doesnt understand the German being spoken, you can. Bravo!Japanese and English speakers hold claim to some  freaking mind-blowing Kill Bill scenes  and the adorably awkward scenes of culture shock in Lost in Translation. Now, those are  just a few examples. Bilinguals of any language pair will likely be able to find  some  great content that features both of their languages.4. Raise bilingual children.O nce you know multiple languages, teaching your children both will be a snapâ€"and theyll be lifelong bilinguals. Youll have given some other human being the gift of being a badass bilingual.Oh, and aside from that, theyll gain all kinds of great development and learning-related benefits.5. Youll think before you talk. You think more carefully about the words you use and what you express when speaking a non-native language. It forces you to think more and crank all the words through the logical gears in your brain. This is a godsend for bilingual couples. Before I ever saw the results of scientific research, I already knew that this was a thing.I noticed for the longest time that Id developed a tendency to switch to Spanish when discussing a problem with my boyfriend (whos perfectly fluent in English). I never really considered the reason why, but it makes complete senseâ€"speaking in an acquired language helps you think more logically, process information better and speak more evenly.  6. Become a mega problem solver. All bilinguals have gone through some moments of serious linguistic problem solving.Think about the instances when youve had to pause while speaking your weaker language. Even if youre not bilingual yet and only know a little of your target language, youll know what Im talking about here. You know what you want to say, but not in the language youre currently speaking. Its either on the tip of your tongue or totally eluding you while in the middle of a conversation. You cant move forward without the word, so you have to snap into problem solving mode. This often works in one of two ways: (1) You provide clues for your conversation partner so they can help you remember what that thing is called, or (2) you say f%$k it and decide to continue by dancing around the word with similes, roundabout explanations and hand gestures. On top of that, you generally are required to be creative (often with limited language and mental roadblocks) and to consider differe nt linguistic and cultural nuances while communicating in new languages.Bilinguals have demonstrated to scientists, time and time again, that  they excel in critical thinking and have special cognitive advantages when it comes to problem solving.  Every time you stumble over words and phrasing, remind yourself that youre training your brain and developing some serious skills with real-life applications.7. Break the ice.Dude, people respect the fact that youre bilingual. Its a huge ice breaker which gives you pleasant things to talk about, impresses others and helps strangers to gain interest in you personally. Monolingual people (and polyglots who dont speak one of your languages) may be curious to hear how words in one of your languages  sound. If youve put in a lot of effort to learn a new language and are interacting with native speakers, theyre going to respect and appreciate this more than you know. For those of you planning to work internationally, the more fluent you are in yo ur host countrys native language, the better your work will flow. People are more willing to collaborate with someone whos gone the extra mile to cross cultural and linguistic boundaries. If youre originally from the United States, youre going to blow peoples minds. Youre going to destroy  long-held stereotypes of stubborn, monolingual Americans who refuse to learn Mexican and want foreigners  to speak American in their countryâ€"or who simply dont care about the rest of the world.I know, you want to hide under a rock and die when youre sitting around a table with 12 childhood friends and somebody challenges you with, Oh my gosh! Say something in Mandarin Chinese! Rather, you should embrace this as part of your bilingual life and learn to love the positive reactions to your awesome skills.   So if you werent already excited to become bilingual, you now have loads of motivation to push  you towards your goal. Teaching Organic Chemistry Using The Organic Chemistry Tutor Oxidation

Teaching Organic Chemistry Using The Organic Chemistry Tutor OxidationThe organic chemistry tutor oxidation is an increasingly popular method for teaching organic chemistry. The main benefits of the organic chemistry tutor oxidation are that it is relatively easy to implement, and there is relatively little cost involved. The first benefit is that because this is a fairly inexpensive means of introducing students to the methods and concepts of organic chemistry, you can easily throw a new student's chemistry teacher to the wolves without much fuss. This is especially important in places where there is a lot of time pressure. Without any form of supervision, it is possible to teach a large group of students on your own without feeling like you are being taken advantage of.When it comes to cost, the best thing about using this method is that you don't have to spend the money on expensive (and in many cases, just plain unhelpful) materials. Many of the textbooks used for teaching organic chemistry contain extensive explanations of all the most popular reactions, and this is not the case when you use the organic chemistry tutor oxidation. You can simply take a new student to one of your chemistry labs and give them a demonstration. The organic chemistry tutor oxidation also makes it very easy to assess a student's progress. On top of all these benefits, the teacher is free to take the classes as frequently as they want, so there is no worry about whether the organic chemistry tutor oxidation is meeting your needs. If there is one thing that is really helpful for teachers, it is knowing when a student has learnt enough to require more help or is ready to take on an advanced course. By the time that occurs, the organic chemistry tutor oxidation is generally ready to start teaching more advanced courses, as well as easier courses. If you have an internet connection, you can also use the organic chemistry tutor oxidation in a highly effective computer programme. (Source: Wikimedia Commons)If you’re learning Chinese, you have to add the pronunciation dictionary “Forvo” to your browser favourites.  Just type whatever Chinese word you’d like to pronounce into the search bar and the website will tell you exactly how it’s pronounced. However, thi s isn’t just a website for those learning Chinese. Forvo claims to have pronunciations for every word in the world! While this probably isn’t true, there are still tonnes of different languages available with multiple examples of pronunciations for each word.In addition to words, there are also examples of full sentences, expressions, and idioms for you to listen to as well.JukuuWhile dictionaries are great for looking up words, you’ll understand a word much better if you can see it being used in context or in a sentence.  This is where Jukuu comes into play. Jukuu is more than a dictionary, it’s a search engine for Chinese-English sentences and translations so that you can see both what the word means and how you’d use it in a sentence.Personally, I find that these kinds of websites are far more useful than dictionaries since an out-of-context translation of a word can result in you completely misunderstanding a word or a whole sentence.Chinese ForumsIf you want to improv e you Chinese from the comfort of your own home, you need to get involved with communities of other language learners, too.  Chinese Forums is one of the best places to go if you have any questions about learning Chinese or are having a problem. There are plenty of very active users who are happy to help absolute beginners as well as more experienced students. While most of the videos are in English, there are sections completely in Chinese that are accompanied very clearly by subtitles so that you won’t get lost.Chinese with Mike: While Mike’s lessons are never serious, that doesn’t mean they can’t be educational. These are a great way to learn Chinese while having a load of fun. The videos are between 10 and 15 minutes each and go at a very good pace for those learning. You’ll never be bored in Teacher Mike’s (MIKE LAOSHI) classes.Aside from all the educational videos you can find on Chinese on YouTube, don’t forget that there are other ways to use videos to help you learn Mandarin Chinese.
